January 2007

The V on Smallville: Justice Published 29.01.2007 The question the 11th episode of Season 6 answers for comic book fans is whether a faithful and entertaining, live-action rendition of the Justice League could ever make it into existence. The question it leaves for Europe is when on earth the current season will make it across the Atlantic.

The only hint proffered by Channel 4 is this:

"Year 4 is currently showing on Channel 4.  Look out for brand new season 6 in the new year on E4."

It's something, right?

The V on Smokin' Aces Published 12.01.2007 Smokin' Aces, the latest film from the director of police-thriller/French Connection-remake Narc, follows the multiple narratives surrounding FBI informant Buddy “Aces” Israel . The V on Apocalypto Published 05.01.2007 Set amidst the final days of the Mayan civilisation; a time of war, prophecy and change, Mel Gibson's latest film, charting the journey of young tribesman Jaguar Paw, is a film alive with quality performances from fresh talent and bold with the intensity now a given from Hollywood's most controversial player/rebel.

The V on Miami Vice: Unrated Director's Edition Published 01.01.2007 Second viewings and director’s cuts often equate to further enjoyment of a film already on The V’s hit-list, but rarely do they transform his opinion as drastically as you will see here. The New Year opens with a fresh perspective indeed…

December 2006

Hey! Listen! Published by MockTurtle 29.12.2007 Rather foolishly, when asked if I would like to do this, I was told I would be given free reign. And that's what I have. So here's a torrent of hyperbole about stuff I've recently paid for as I try to get you lot to fork over cash for it too. Then we can all talk about how much we like the same stuff if we ever meet. Great, eh?

So, with one quick “huzzah!” for breaking down social boundaries and making friends over commercialism, let's enter into a new world of carefully chosen puns and excitingly fresh purchases!

The V on Deja Vu Published 18.12.2006 Sound familiar?

November 2006

The V on Hollywoodland Published 24.11.2006 Look! Up on the silver screen! A shamefully under-promoted and underrated film starring Ben Affleck as the small screen Man of Steel. That's right, Ben Affleck. Miss this film at your own peril.

The V calls Casino Royal's bluff Published 17.11.2006 The V spends two hours looking for the ejector seat in the cinema whilst realising that the concern over Daniel Craig should actually have been channelled towards everyone else involved in this catastrophic film

The V on The Prestige Published 13.11.2006 Watch closely...

The V Gets His Hands on Superman's Return to DVD Published 12.11.2006 My region 3 copy of Superman Returns arrived this weekend and with it bearing more than a striking resemblance to the Region 1 and 2 editions – it's exactly the same – I thought it only right to share my thoughts on the two-disc package.

October 2006

The V on Marie Antoinette Published 27.10.2006 The often skilled Sofia Coppola turns in a film with a stylish eye for detail; but with a foundation in a very skeletal script and rather sedated direction it ultimately lacks the rum punch this story demands

The V on A Good Year Published 20.10.2006 All talents are on form in Ridley Scott's latest - a film shunned by critics which proves to be the most enjoyable and endearing of the year

The V's Most Watched Vol.2 Published 18.10.06 This edition: a prison theme…

The V's Last Kiss Published 13.10.06 The Last Kiss, a film about the “midlife-crisis”, has one of its own to worry about: identity. The film's first act is microcosmic for the rest of the film's duration, in which the audience is provided with a serious, dual focus narrative appearing to parallel Zach Braff's Michael and his partner, Jacinda Barrett's Jenna, with the in-laws' own crumbling relationship. This commendable foundation for the narrative, however, is offset by a dastardly streak of sexual comedy which is both explicit and distracting.

The V's Most Watched Vol.1 Published 07.10.2006 It's been a busy few months, what with the bulk of the site's launch, but that hasn't stopped me dipping in and out of some choice DVDs and T.V. Here's what I've been watching and why…

The V on The Departed Published 07.10.2006 This Martin Scorcese remake of Hong Kong “mole versus mole” crime thriller Infernal Affairs finds the director back in the genre he embraced and redefined.

The V on NBC's Heroes Published 06.10.2006 Heroes is a show that will air in the U.K. imaginably in the next couple of months and one well worth tuning into for those looking for a fresh small-screen approach to the superhero genre.

The V on Children of Men Published 06.10.2006 Think Escape From New York as seen through the eyes of the great realist Andre Basin and you're some way to getting the gist of Children of Men. Set in a near-future Britain where fertility is myth, this is essentially a road movie with Clive Owen's character escorting the last baby on earth to safety.

The V on Smallville Season 6 Published 04.10.2006 You will bow down before this Season Premiere, you and your heirs!

The V on Miami Vice Published 02.10.2006 I went into this one without the cult sentiments of the T.V. series that a lot of critics seem to have, and instead went in a massive Collateral and Heat fan. I adore those two movies. They are movies about professionals, not about the morons “doing liquor store hold ups with born to lose” tattooed across their chests. They are movies directed by a professional too, one who probably knows the serial numbers on the sides of the guns his actors are wielding, one who doesn't waste a scene, a line of dialogue or a bullet.

September 2006

The V Wears Prada Published 27.09.2006 I had no idea what to expect from this and after the first act, I still wasn't certain what I was getting. I knew Meryl Streep was doing a good job essentially playing a “real-life” Cruella DeVille, I knew I wanted to see more of Stanley Tucci and I knew that there was the clear potential for this film to fall into Hollywood-parable-on-materialism-101 hell.

The V on Superman Returns Published 22.09.2006 Let me set the scene: Superman is my favourite comic-book character of all time. Heck, he’s most peoples'. I love the first two Reeves movies, I loved the Lois and Clark series, and I’m obsessed with Smallville. I’m also a lil bit of a buff of the comics. Now the past few years has been nail biting - for all of us. We gasped at Routh’s first appearance, though the golden age, art deco feel cushioned us. We questioned whether it should be Welling after that Alex Ross mock up (the tease!). And then for the past six months all we’ve done is pray before the potential the teaser (in particular) offered us. Now it’s here. Superman has returned and…

The V on Crank Published 20.09.2006 Crank is high concept, low budget and very low brow. I'll admit I don't mind Jason Statham. I had fun with the first two Transporters and liked the B-movie path he was taking with his career working with people like Carpenter and Besson whilst his more mainstream contemporaries were boasting hollow about their action chops without delivering up on the screen. So when I heard about Crank, an adrenaline charged “Speed in-a-person!” revenge flick I was positive. Having seen the film though, I can tell you that it won't stay with you even thirty minutes after the closing credits.

The V on Aquaman Published 11.09.2006 While this pilot, which is as yet unaired in the U.K. and is the only survivor of a series that could have been, lacks the epic roots and imagery of Smallville's original pilot (a crucified Superman anyone?), the forty minutes on show here have a lot more positives than negatives.

The V on Harsh Times Published 11.09.2006 I went into this one with nothing backing me up but the premise; Bale as a gulf war child of “Generation Kill” in a ride along flick, and I must say, it delivered. Bale carries the bulk of the film and Ayer, who wrote The Fast and the Furious, Training Day and S.W.A.T, knows it. Ayer lets Bale carry the narrative, and carry it well, but not without bringing some nice, masculine direction to the table too.
